How Digital Disruption Is Reshaping the Healthcare Industry

Find me on:

The healthcare industry is all ready to embrace the “digital disruption”  that is redefining nearly every industry. Technology not only changes the way healthcare organizations operate, it has the ability to change the way that healthcare is delivered.  The idea of customer-centric healthcare systems, where patients have better access to information and better quality care, is driving the adoption of digital services that include mobile health records, telemedicine, and integrated-care apps.

Weighing the Benefits Against Potential Risks

healthcare digital disruption - weighin g benefits vs. riskWith every digital opportunity that arises, the question of risk and compliance also needs to be considered. The benefits of electronic health care records include increased efficiency and productivity, better communication and ultimately better patient care.  Because electronic health records can be accessed on demand, the can improve the quality of care and can even save lives.   However, the reality of a data breach can have significant consequences. The $5.5 million settlement for a HIPAA violation  in South Florida that compromised the protected health information (PHI) of 80,000 patients demonstrates just how costly failed security can be.

Meeting the demands of regulatory compliance is a must for the healthcare industry. The burden of securely maintaining patient data has led to a rise in IT expenses at a time when everyone is trying to lower the costs associated with healthcare. At the same time, patients are demanding a better end-to-end experience from their healthcare providers. How can organizations successfully balance the needs of their customers against the needs of the business, in an ever changing security landscape?

The “On Demand” Culture Reaches Healthcare

With the popularity of platforms like Uber and Amazon Prime, it’s no surprise that telehealth services provided by companies like Teladoc are also gaining in popularity. Patients now expect great care to be easily accessible, regardless of where they are. And they expect that the quality of care will be the same as if they were physically present in the doctor’s office or hospital.  Healthcare providers need to carefully evaluate their complete in-office and virtual patient experience. By adding telemedicine and telehealth programs, health care facilities can dramatically increase access to quality health care and improve patient outcomes.  The right technology solutions are critical to providing the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

Digital Disruption Empowers the Patient

It’s now common practice for patients to research, compare, and evaluate all of their options. Statistics show that 66 percent of internet users look online for information about a disease or medical problem, and one in 20 google searches is for health-related information.  Patient engagement is critical as it promotes informed decision-making and improves health outcomes. In order to grow in a competitive marketplace, healthcare professionals need to provide patients with information, quality care, access and accountability.
